People in digital and virtual environments

Advances in computer graphics, sensors and display technology have enabled us to ‘trick’ the human mind into thinking it is in a virtual reality. This Virtual Reality (VR) technology allows us to simulate realistic environments, objects and social situations.

In our research, we study how people interact and react in virtual environments. This can involve people's behaviour as well as their physical reactions. Most of our activities take place in the Virtual Reality laboratory, where we can create the feeling of being completely immersed in a virtual environment. There are also various simulation setups, for example for haptics.

We do research on:

  • VR for improved health in elderly care
  • VR in cancer rehabilitation
  • VR as a tool in primary education
  • VR for urban planning
  • VR for analysing complex data sets
  • Augmented reality (AR) for industrial operators

Research questions (examples)

  • How should the interaction with a virtual environment be designed for a particular task?
  • What can we learn from training in a virtual environment?
  • How are people psychologically and physiologically affected by interacting with different virtual environments?
